Agricultural Engineering Graduate Degree Requirements

Master of Science--Thesis

A minimum of 30 graduate credits as follows:

8 research credits:

  • 1 credit of AE 601
  • 1 credit 598 Technical Paper
  • 6 credits of AE 699 Research

22 coursework credits:

  • 3 credits in math or statistics
  • 6 AE graduate credits, excluding AE 590, 601, and 598
  • 3 credits of coursework in another College of Engineering department, excluding seminars
  • 10 credits from no more than three departments (including ABE)

Master of Engineering--Non-thesis

A minimum of 32 graduate credits as follows:

27 credits of coursework:

  • 9 agricultural engineering credits, excluding 590, 601, and 598
  • 3 credits of math or statistics
  • 3 credits of coursework in another department in the College of Engineering, excluding seminars
  • 12 credits from no more than three departments (including Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering)

5 credits of creative component:

  • 4 credits of creative component research, AE 599
  • 1 credit of AE 601

Doctor of Philosophy

The PhD requires 72 credits beyond the BS degree (master's credits count toward this minimum). The minimums are as follows:

12 credits of TSM 699 research

42 minimum credits of coursework beyond the BS degree (The credits from your master's program count toward this requirement.)

  • 9 credits of statistics or mathematics courses (at least one must be Statistics 401 or higher)
  • 12 credits of agricultural engineering (AE) graduate courses, excluding AE 590, 601, 698
  • 14 credits of other courses or a declared co-major or minor from another department

1-3 credits must be 694 teaching practicum

1 credit of AE 601

1 credit of AE 698 technical paper

2. A teaching-extension experience approved by the Department Graduate Faculty

3. The 6-credit enrichment component is required of all PhD students majoring in Agricultural Engineering or administered by the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department.
