Current Activities: Tim Shepherd recently graduated with an M.S. in Agriculture Engineering from Iowa State University. He has accepted a position in the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University as a Senior Extension Associate.
Tim's focus will be Integrated Dairy Waste Management for the PRO-DAIRY Program, a group which focuses on facilitating New York State economic development by increasing the profitability and competitiveness of the dairy industry.
Tim's position responsibility is to provide leadership and support in the development and delivery of educational programs to New York State dairy producers and agri-services which focus on animal waste management as it relates to reduced environmental risk and use of co-products. A major programmatic goal will be the development, documentation and demonstration manure treatment and handling methods for New York State dairy farms to allow them to effectively and economically implement their nutrient management plans.
ISU Thesis project: Concentration and Extraction of Phosphorus from Swine Manure Slurries as Struvite.
Other ISU Projects: Southeastern broiler gaseous and particulate matter emission monitoring biogas methane potential from animal waste and ethanol byproducts.
Iowa State University Responsibilities: As a graduate research student in Agricultural Waste Management Lab, my main responsibility was the development of a feasible on-farm phosphorus removal and recovery system. To achieve this goal we developed a continuous flow pilot-scale reactor to precipitate phosphorus as struvite and investigated methods to recover the precipitated struvite. I also provided support in the development and implementation of the AWML biogas methane potential research and other research efforts.
As an Undergraduate research assistant for the AWML, I was involved in the design, construction, and implementation of Mobile Air Emission Monitoring Units for the Southeastern broiler gaseous and particulate matter emission monitoring project.
